In 1867 Samuel Jerisich settled in Gig Harbor and become the commercial fishing industry here. Making fish nets by hand, Jerisich created an operation to smoke fish and render dogfish oil.
Soon many other pioneers came from Croatia, Norway and Italy and fishing become the center of the communities economy for more than 100 years. Some continue to do this day, and for our loca fishing families, fishing is not just a job, it is a way of life.
