Gig Harbor Safeway Takes it to a New Level

Grand Opening December 10th

I’m a grocery store junkie. There I said it. I love to shop for groceries. I love a store that has both the inexpensive little things I need like bobby pins as well as liver pate and fine wine. I love a store that I can get a great deal on bananas, while picking out a filet mignon. Oh I love to shop! And there is no one in Gig Harbor who is more excited than me about the brand new Gig Harbor Safeway.

So when I found out that I got to take a tour of the not quit completed store this afternoon, I was really excited. Larry Olson who is the General Superintendent on the project from Tilton Pacific Construction took me through this 65,000 square foot store; and it is a wonder.

Known as a “Safeway Lifestyle Elite” store, the facility is 20,000 square feet bigger than the existing Safeway. The wine department alone felt bigger than my house. The finishes and styling from the wine department to the Starbucks are all warm and rich and inviting. The Starbucks offers a large indoor and outdoor seating area that includes a fireplace.

With ten days to go until opening, construction workers were busy. Stockers were stocking, cleaners were cleaning, electricians, concrete workers and many more people were hustling around. It was a bee hive of activity both inside and out. And all I could do was smile in anticipation!

So here’s the scoop – if you are as excited as me. At 8pm on December 9th the OLD Safeway will close its doors for the final time. During the next 12 hours final touches and transfers will take place from the old to the new building for the GRAND OPENING OF THE NEW SAFEWAY ON SATURDAY DECEMBER 10TH AT 8AM. Yes you should be there – it will be worth dealing with the traffic that is sure to pounce on the building that day. Safeway is also planning some early evening activities that day including Santa and a tree lighting. I don’t have all the details on that yet, but I will post more when I have it.

But the opening is not the end of it. By the end of December the old Safeway building will begin to be demolished. By April 1st or earlier, the pad for the new Kohl’s store will be ready for construction to begin on that site. Construction date of the Safeway Fuel Station has not been announced, but its coming.

I too am a grocery store junkie and am looking forward to the opening of the new Safeway store. I am sad that I will have a new layout to learn.. but from what I here the new layout is phenomenal.

I was told that Gig harbor would not allow the fuel station, but am thrilled to know that they are placing one in.

Various activities will be going on during the open house that includes Santa Claus/ FISH Food Bank from 10-6.. free pictures with food donation.

I will be there 8am ready to find a seat at the Starbucks seating area :)

a latte of blessings & giggles,
Jeanie

We were excited to visit the new Safeway, but extremely disappointed to learn the new digs didn't translate into better selection. We still need to visit their competitors for needed staples in our house. Too bad.
