Ohana Harbor Coffee is Gig Harbor
If you haven’t heard about Ohana Harbor Coffee Company yet, you will. This amazingly rich, dark Kona Coffee is about to explode on the scene – and lucky for us – it’s a family run Gig Harbor business. Get ready to be delighted, Hawaiian style, right here in the Harbor.
Next week Ohana Harbor Coffee Company is moving into their beautiful new headquarters on Peacock Hill, the site of the former Paradise Theatre (or depending on how old you are, the former Scandiadowns).
Ohana is family. In 2007 Gig Harbor residents Steve and Ronna Schreiner became interested in the coffee business in Hawaii when friends of theirs purchased a coffee plantation there. The Schreiner’s believed in what they saw – quality grown Kona Coffee – and took the plunge as an investment. Today the business includes 5 farms on the Big Island growing what they proudly remind us is the only coffee grown in the United States.
And today, the business remains primarily run by the family. Stephanie Shriener Sagle now serves as the Director of Community Involvement, Sales and Marketing for Ohana Harbor Coffee Company and Redbird Kona Coffee. The later name is how the product is sold in Hawaii.
Kona Coffee is grown in the moist mountains of the Big Island, harvested by local Hawaiian workers, and milled (removing the fruit and processing it to the bean) in Hawaii. The beans are then shipped to the “mainland” and Gig Harbor where Ohana works with another local coffee company, Cutters Point for their roasting process. Working to keep all aspects of the project from here on local, Ohana uses local printers, bagging company and delivery to bring the product to customers.
Locally you can purchase Ohana at Harbor Greens in Gig Harbor and soon more locations. You can also purchase it at Tacoma Boys, Stadium Thriftway and eventually and through an on-line order “pick up”. If you attend a Tacoma Rainiers game at the new Cheney Stadium, Ohana is the only coffee served.
Now what about price? Yes Kona tends to be a higher price point than many other options available out there. But Stephanie says Ohana will make you a believer after one sip. “We maintain quality control by remaining true to our values and producing a superior product “from tree to cup”.
As Ohana settles in to their new building and slowly expands their operation, Gig Harbor will see their presence around town at events and activities. It’s exciting to see a local business, creating jobs and a first class product, and getting involved in the community. What more can we ask for? What more, than Ohana.
