City Of Gig Harbor Releases Survey Results To Date

Gig Harbor, WA. October 9th, 2014 – The City of Gig Harbor has received overwhelming response to a recent survey requesting input on future farmers market development plans in Gig Harbor. The survey has been posted to the city website since September 29th with close to one-hundred responses to date. The survey will remain on the website throughout the redevelopment process. Citizens are encouraged to contribute feedback.

Since 2007, the Gig Harbor Farmers Market has operated every Wednesdays between June and September at Skansie Brothers Park, 3207 Harborview Drive, in the heart of downtown. A second day was added several years later. The request for input was made in order for the City to take the pulse of citizens and vendors on the current market operation and to improve and enhance certain aspects for the upcoming year. Currently, a Request for Qualifications from non-profit agencies or groups to operate and manage a fish and farmers market on City property are being accepted. The survey is an important piece to the redevelopment plan, and consists of one question acting more as an open line of communication, rather than a traditional survey. That question asks: “Please list any suggestions to improve our farmers market, and any specific items, such as types or varieties of vegetables or food products that you wish were more frequently available in the market”.

Of the ninety-nine responses, eighty-nine percent requested a change in the way the market currently operates. The majority of these changes, ninety-four percent, indicated a desire for more fresh produce. Thirty-two percent of responders requested a fish market element, with bakery/pasta, meat, and organic products close behind. Seventeen percent of responders asked for fewer or no craft items at the market. See a more detailed breakdown of responses here.

“These survey results track with the informal input we have been receiving from citizens and community leaders for months. People have been asking the city for help in improving our farmers market so that it truly becomes a farmers market with a greater variety of fresh products including produce, flowers, fish, meats, cheeses etc. It’s encouraging to receive these survey responses, and input from many other sources expressing excitement at the prospects of a high quality new farmers market for Gig Harbor next summer,” stated Ron Williams, City Administrator.

Complete survey results will be available on the city website by the end of October. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) contains instructions governing the requirements for a proposal and can be downloaded here: RFQ - Fish and Farmers' Market. The proposal must be submitted no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2014 to City of Gig Harbor, City Clerk's Office, 3510 Grandview Street, Gig Harbor, WA 98335. Facsimile response or an electronic response to this RFQ does not meet the requirement of a sealed proposal and will not be accepted.
