NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY 2013 — OCTOBER 26

Working together with our community on our Nation’s Largest Day of Doing Good!

Gig Harbor, Washington, October 1, 2013 — October 26 is National Make a Difference Day (MDD). On this day, across the nation, millions of Americans will come together in a common mission to improve their communities. On this day, our Gig Harbor & Key Peninsula community has come together to plan the first ever GHKP Make a Difference Day celebration of its own.

Our community’s foundation, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, working together with leaders from the Key Peninsula Community Council, Gig Harbor Fish Food Bank, Harbor WildWatch, and many others has planned a local campaign at their temporary MDD headquarters in the WestSide Business Center at 3214 50th Street Ct. NW, Suite 104 adjacent to Uptown Gig Harbor.

The Foundation's 5 Core Area Boards (CABs) will be represented and key partner organizations will be engaged to make a difference in our community. Foundation President Julie Gustanski said, "This event will physically bring people from our community together. At the MADD Campaign headquarters they can make a financial donation, deliver food, school supplies, winter clothing, or fruits and vegetables from their gardens, or sign up to receive needed services from area organizations.”

At the October 26 MADD event, our community can also see how the grassroots work being done by the Foundation and its CABs: Arts & Culture, Education, Parks & Environment, Recreation, and Social Capital, work to help non-profits on both peninsulas fulfill their needs. And, learn how they can easily make a difference through volunteering in our community.

For example, people can sign up to donate food or time to a local food bank, but they can also get information about how to receive food if their family is in need. Likewise, there will be opportunities to sign-up to volunteer time and services (e.g. pro bono legal services, transportation, housing, youth projects and services, etc.)

Across the nation on this day, thousands of initiatives will take place, involving hundreds of non-profit organizations, businesses, corporations, and millions of individuals who make up our communities. “Make A Difference Day is a demonstration of our core belief that it’s through people that change happens in the world,” says Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute and Co-Founder of HandsOn Network. “People across the country will be engaged in service projects that will strengthen their communities on this special day of civic engagement.”

The “Gig Harbor & Key Peninsula Makes a Difference!” event will help bring national attention to the great things going on in our amazing community. It will also be a great way for all to learn more about volunteer opportunities and connect people with services they may need. MDD is a celebration of volunteerism! The Foundation’s Social Capital CAB chair, Irene Torres says, “I believe that our GHKP Make a Difference Day will both help bring awareness, and truly make a difference to serving the needs in our community.”

Station Manager Spencer Abersold from KGHP-FM radio will broadcast live from the location that day! With support from Century Link, a telethon is planned from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm where the message 'we just made a difference for our community' can be shared by callers from a phone bank.

There is still time to get involved. For more information and to sign up as a volunteer or apply for a booth, please call (253) 514-6338 or visit www.gigharborfoundation.org/mdd.
