Gig Harbor Watersports Grand Opening
The Gig Harbor Fly Shop is excited to announce that they are expanding their business along the downtown waterfront. Originally started as a home-based, internet only business in 2004, the Gig Harbor Fly Shop has experienced significant growth every year since. In 2012, the business expanded their inventory to include pedal drive fishing kayaks. The fly shop’s owner and founder, Blake Merwin commented, “Most customers seemed to be curious or skeptical that first couple of years. No one else was doing anything like this in Puget Sound. But we really believed in the product. We believed that fishing from stable, pedal drive kayaks in our local saltwater, is the best way to fish our area. We worked hard at giving people opportunities to try the kayaks and we constantly promoted them online through social media.”
The constant promoting of kayak fishing eventually caught the attention of kayak fishing’s leader, the Hobie Cat Company. The Gig Harbor Fly Shop opened up an account with Hobie in 2015. According to Blake, “the kayaks, especially with Hobie, have been a game changer. It’s now half of all of our sales. With the expansion of creating a second business, we are hoping this gives the watersports part of our business more room to grow.”
The new business is called Gig Harbor Watersports and is just two buildings down from the fly shop’s current location towards Skansie Brothers Park. They will have their Grand Opening ceremony on November 4, 2017 at 12:00pm which will consist of the christening of a kayak. Following the Grand Opening will be an Open House weekend, November 5 & 6 from 9:00am-6:00pm. During the Open House will be opportunities to meet manufacturer representatives, participate in raffles and giveaways, and learn from guest speakers. Regional Hobie Fishing Team member, Brad Hole, will be presenting on kayak trolling lead core lines for trout in local lakes on November 5 at 11am. Dick Wark, Gig Harbor Watersports Hobie Fishing Team member, will be presenting November 5 at 1pm on fishing tactics for salmon, sea bass, and more from the ocean to the estuaries. New Gig Harbor Watersports employee, Bryant Hawkins, will be presenting on paddle strokes, appropriate paddle sizing, and choosing the right paddle on November 6 at 1pm.
In addition to kayaks from Hobie Cat, Native Watercraft, and Hurricane, Gig Harbor Watersports is also expanding their business to include Stand Up Paddleboards from Hobie and Bote Boards, as well as some conventional tackle for kayak anglers. In regards to the new offerings and direction of the business, Blake said “We’re really making this all about fun on the water, not only fishing. In addition to our kayak rentals we will also have high quality SUP boards for rent. We are also going to be offering kayak and SUP trips and tours around Puget Sound and Hood Canal. The fly shop does a ton with Patagonia and we’re going to expand that inventory down to Watersports but it will be more about their lifestyle and surf clothing. We’re also bringing in some great brands like Rainbow Sandals. It’s definitely a lifestyle shop for all of us in Gig Harbor that love to have fun on the water.”
