On November 17, 2017, the City of Gig Harbor was informed of some potentially offensive fliers that were posted on city utility poles along Borgen Boulevard. Per the Gig Harbor Municipal Code, these signs were posted illegally and were removed. Recent court decisions have restricted the ability of a government to regulate the content of signs posted in public right of way, citing the First Amendment right of free speech. Although offensive in content to many, it does not appear as though these fliers were in violation of criminal law. In this instance the fliers were removed for violating our utility code (GHMC 17.80.120). The City of Gig Harbor values all of our population regardless of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or mental, physical, or sensory handicap.
