Windham Hill recording artist Scott Cossu to perform in Olalla
Seattle guitarist Lonnie Mardis will share the stage.
(OLALLA) Windham Hill Records co-founder Scott Cossu will bring his award-winning jazz and New Age music to the Olalla Community Hall on Saturday, May 23 as a surprise addition to the community’s mostly monthly concert series.
Cossu combines elements of classical, jazz, rock, blues and ethnic melodies in a marvelous blend of old and new, foreign and familiar.
He often speaks of a “world concept” in his approach to music. His use of rhythms, scales and modes of traditional ethnic peoples is intended to bring the audience into contact with unfamiliar cultures in a pleasing way.
“I’m really looking forward to playing at the Olalla community hall,” Cossu said in an email. “I just signed on with a new record company, Heart Dance Records and I’m getting ready for my newest release, ‘Safe in Your Arms.’ It’s sort of a lullaby album for my two precious grand daughters. It’s also a compilation of several past favorites.”
The target date for release is October and Cossu will be giving several album release concerts and touring to promote it. “But we’ll be taking pre-orders at our upcoming concerts like our Olalla show,” he said with a smile.
The concert is sponsored by the Olalla Community Club as part of the Mostly Monthly Music Series. Proceeds from the shows are split between the artist and the Club, which has been serving the Olalla community since 1937.
Suggested donation is $15-$20 or give-what-you-can, according to Nolan Pepperdine, coordinator of the music series.
“We are so excited to be able to present a such an musical icon at the Olalla community hall,” Pepperdine said. “Scott's music is indeed timeless and a style of jazz that we seldom get to experience close up.”
Playing with Scott is “the amazing jazz guitarist Lonnie Mardis, a headliner in his own right,” Pepperdine said.
As always, the program begins with an all-invited potluck for those who want to socialize and meet the musicians before the show.
The final concert in the Olalla music series features Rupert Wales on Saturday, June 27.

“Mr. Cossu, obviously, is content to let his fingers do the talking. The man can flat play.”
