Project Description

Starting in early June the City of Gig Harbor will begin construction on the 2011 Roadway Maintenance and Repair Project. The work to be completed consists of roadway repair on Soundview Drive, and asphalt overlay on Harborview Drive. More specifically, the work on Soundview Drive will occur between Harborview Drive and Olympic Drive. This work requires the repair of deteriorated sections of roadway, placement of new roadway subgrade, placement of new asphalt and finally placement of a single course of chip seal. The work on Harborview Drive will occur between Soundview Drive and Pioneer Way. This work will consist of grinding the existing roadway and placement of new asphalt over the entire roadway surface.

Anticipated Preliminary Project Schedule

Soundview Drive- Soundview Drive will be completed in four phases. Work in each phase is scheduled between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The four phases are as follows: Phase 1 Roadway Repair, Phase 2 Pavement Marking Removal and Crack Sealing, Phase 3 Chip Seal Placement, and Phase 4 Fog Seal and Roadway Striping. Pavement Repair may begin as early as June 6 and will be completed by June 23. We estimate that this phase will take five (5) days to complete. Pavement Marking Removal and Crack Sealing will follow and be completed by July 8. We estimate this phase will take three (3) days to complete. The Chip Seal Placement may begin as early as July 27. We estimate this work will be completed in two (2) days. Fog Seal and Roadway Striping will follow Chip Seal Placement and should take approximately three (3) days to complete. All phases will be physically complete by September 23. Although the work window for this project may seem long, the actual working days for each phase will be done in short durations (1 to 5 days per phase). The work window length is to account for curing times for the asphalt products in between phases and to add for the possibility of poor weather.

Harborview Drive Overlay- This work may begin as early as June 6 but must be completed before September 23. The City estimates this work will take three (3) days to complete. The contractor’s working hours will be between 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in an effort to minimize the traffic delays to the downtown corridor. Once a firm start date for this work has been established changeable message signs will be placed in strategic locations to notify the general public. All business directly affected by this work will be contacted in person prior to the work occurring.

Impacts to the General Public

Soundview Drive- During construction on Soundview Drive, expect long traffic delays for all phases of work being performed. Please use alternate routes where possible. Loud noises and vibration from construction equipment will also occur. During the Chip Seal Placement there may be dusty conditions and loose rock on the roadway. Please use caution while driving in these conditions.

Harborview Drive Overlay- In an effort to minimize the impacts to the general public, the hours for this construction will take place between 3:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Expect traffic delays and a possible detour route during the paving process. Loud noise and vibration from construction equipment should be expected.
