Project Description

Starting this June 25th the City’s contractor (Miles Resources) will begin construction on the 2012 Pavement Maintenance Project. The work to be completed under this contract generally consists of repair and maintenance of 14 asphalt roadways within the City of Gig Harbor. See the attached map for the Project Locations. More specifically, this work will require the repair of deteriorated sections of asphalt roadway, placement of new roadway subgrade and asphalt patching of these sections followed by a 1 ½” or 2” asphalt overlay over the roadway surface. The City will also be placing a Bituminous Surface Treatment or “Chip Seal” on other specific roadways throughout the City as identified on the provided map.

Anticipated Preliminary Project Schedule

The City held a pre-construction meeting with Miles Resources on June 19, 2012. At this meeting Miles provided their preliminary construction schedule. Starting the week of June 25th Miles will have construction activities being performed on Burnham Drive, Canterwood Blvd., N. Burnham Drive and Sehmel Drive. This work will include shoulder maintenance, ditch cleaning, and asphalt grinding in preparation for asphalt overlay which is scheduled to begin during the week of July 2nd. All of this work is weather dependent and the City will provide further updates as the project progresses. This project is to be completed prior to September 30, 2012.

Impacts to the Public

This work will be taking place within the travel lanes and will require extensive traffic control to facilitate construction. Long traffic delays can be expected caused by restricted lanes, two-way flagging of traffic, restricted ingress and egress of driveways and side streets, and the possible use of pilot cars on some roadway sections. Due to the nature of this work the construction zone will constantly move along the affected roadways so lane restrictions and traffic delays should not persist for long. We encourage using alternate routes whenever possible and your patience during construction will be greatly appreciated.

Large construction equipment and hauling vehicles will be present in and around the construction zone including asphalt grinding machinery, paving machines, rollers, chip seal equipment and dump trucks. During the Chip Sealing process there will be loose gravel and dusty conditions for several days following the application so we urge motorists to drive slowly and exercise extreme caution when driving through these affected areas. There will be minor vibration from rolling equipment and loud construction noise from heavy machinery and back-up alarms.
