City of Gig Harbor hosts Dignitaries for Special Ribbon Cutting

IMG_1968Gig Harbor, Wash., May 21st, 2015 – On Saturday, June 6th, at 11am, Gig Harbor’s Mayor Jill Guernsey will host United States Senator Maria Cantwell and United States Congressman Derek Kilmer for a special ceremony and ribbon cutting for the Gig Harbor sandspit and lighthouse property. The event will take place at the sandspit, located at the mouth of Gig Harbor bay. The public is invited to attend the ceremony via marine access only.

The City invited Senator Cantwell and Congressman Kilmer to celebrate this momentous occasion after many years working to acquire the property, in which they were both instrumental during the process. The land, which is currently under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Coast Guard, became available after the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Marine Transportation Act of 2014 passed Congress in December. The Act included a provision transferring ownership of the property surrounding the lighthouse to the City of Gig Harbor.

The City of Gig Harbor would eventually like to have a park on the sand spit on which the lighthouse stands. Due to surrounding private property, the park would be a marine park accessible only from the water.
