City of Gig Harbor’s Bower Moving On to New Position

Gig Harbor, Wash. – January 9, 2012 City of Gig Harbor announced today the departure of Dick Bower, City of Gig Harbor Building & Fire Safety Director and Emergency Management Director. Bower has accepted a position with the California State University at Monterey Bay as their new Emergency Manager.

Bower has been with the City of Gig Harbor for nine years. In that time he has played a key leadership role in bringing the city’s permitting process into the 21st century.

Bower has also led the way in the development of the City of Gig Harbor’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, leading city staff and the community in education and preparation for major and minor disasters from snow storms to earthquakes.

For his leadership, Bower has been recognized numerous times including in 2005 when he received the WA DOE Environmental Excellence Award and the US Coast Guard Public Service Commendation Award for his role and leadership with the Harborview Marina Fire. In addition, in 2010 Bower was named the Building Official of Year by the Washington Association of Building Officials.

City Administrator Rob Karlinsey said “Dick’s leadership and his commitment to public safety have made a big difference in our community. His strong skill set will be very difficult to replace, and he will be missed.”

Bower’s last day with the City of Gig Harbor is Wednesday January 18th. He starts his new job on January 30th.
