Gig Harbor Dragons Conduct Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony
Gig Harbor, WA– On March 17, 2018 The Gig Harbor Dragons, dragon boat club, will celebrate the arrival from China of two new Champion 10 person dragon boats. The celebration will take place at Skansie Brothers Park in Gig Harbor, beginning at 10am.
The club will enact a version of the ancient Chinese ritual, Awakening of the Dragon. This ceremonial rite culminates with the dotting of the eyes of the dragon with red paint; awakening the dragon, ending its time in slumber. Red is the color that symbolizes heat, summer, and fire. It represents good fortune and prosperity. The Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony is also the traditional beginning of dragon boat festival season.
The Gig Harbor Dragons will open their season in a supporting role of the Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup on April 21 & 22. The Dragons will compete the following weekend at Saint Martin Regatta in Olympia, WA.
Gig Harbor Dragons is a program of Gig Harbor’s PenMet Parks and PAA. The club welcomes paddlers of all ages. Currently, it conducts a Youth Paddle Program, Women’s Paddle Team, Mixed Member Team and a Recreational Paddle Program. You can see the Dragons on the waters of beautiful Gig Harbor Bay most days a week. Several of the club members also paddle with the Washington Area Master program (WAM), which will compete at the World Championships in Hungary this July.
The Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard is the Home of the Gig Harbor Dragons, which offers a complete range of marine services and repairs to the South Puget Sound boating community.
