Gig Harbor's Harbor Hill Drive Extension Opening Celebration August 11th
The City of Gig Harbor will celebrate the completion of the Harbor Hill Drive Extension with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday, August 11th, beginning at 11am. The public is invited to attend.
Work on this $9+ million dollar project began last July and construction was completed weeks ahead of schedule. Funding for this project was through a Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) grant, City Traffic Impact fees and Hospital Benefit Zone taxes. The city was awarded grant funding from TIB in 2015, through a competitive process, and the grant was the largest awarded by the agency that year. Since 2000, the city had identified this project as part of it’s Transportation Capitol Improvements Plan. This connection will play a vital role in alleviating traffic congestion off of Borgen Boulevard and the Burnham Dr/Borgen Blvd/SR-16 roundabout.
The engineering firm of David Evans & Associates, Inc. designed the project and general contractor Ceccanti, Inc. completed the construction. The improvements consisted of construction of a new roadway and two roundabouts complete with storm drainage, sidewalks, pedestrain guardrail, landscaping and street lighting.
“The Harbor Hill Drive extension is a much-needed improvement to traffic flow between downtown Gig Harbor and the Harbor Hill area,” says Mayor Kit Kuhn. “It will truly be connecting our communities together.”
- Location: The ceremony will be held near the roundabout at the intersection of Harbor Hill Drive and Sentinel Drive. Parking will be allowed at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Drive.
- Date: Saturday, August 11th
- Time: 11 am
A short presentation will begin at 11am with guest speakers invited to share a few words. Following the presentation there will be a ribbon cutting and guests will then be invited to walk the roadway to the lower roundabout prior to opening to traffic. Pierce Transit’s ‘Get Around Gig Harbor Trolley will be available to provide guests a return trip to the upper roundabout (at approximately 11:45am). Popsicles will be available for guests to enjoy as they walk the route.
