Olalla kicks-off 2017 with live music

FarmStrong bluegrass band plays Jan. 14 at the Olalla Community Hall

OLALLA – Live music is a monthly highlight at Olalla’s Community Hall and on Saturday, Jan. 14 the spotlight falls on FarmStrong, a bluegrass-country style band from Sequim that’s well-known and much-liked throughout the Puget Sound region.

FarmStrong draws inspiration from traditional country, blues and bluegrass and then blazes trails into folk, rock, gospel and soul music.

“Farmstrong is taking the sound of country and bluegrass to new levels,” said Mostly Monthly music series producer Nolan Pepperdine. “Like fine whiskey, their sound is pure, distilled musical magic. They’re definitely not what some people consider a country band – which is basically rock-and-roll with a cowboy hat – but they’re also not a traditional bluegrass band. I guess you could say that these guys tap deep into the roots of both country and bluegrass and then entwine them with folk and rock, Motown and blues.”

Farmstrong comprises four of the best acoustic musicians in the Northwest. Guitarist and vocalist Jim Faddis (formerly of Prairie Flyer) leads the band. Rick Mead, who also plays with Rural Delivery and Me and the Boys, brings his dobro and that high, lonesome sound bluegrass requires. Cort Armstrong adds his Merle Travis-style picking prowess and harmony vocals and John Pyles keeps the rhythm honest on his upright bass.

As always, the evening begins with an all-invited potluck at 6pm; music starts at 7pm. Admission is by suggested donation of $15, but no one is ever turned away, Pepperdine added. Proceeds are split between the musicians and the Olalla Community Club’s maintenance fund for upkeep of the 115-year old hall.

The Mostly Monthly Music Series continues on Feb. 11 with singer-songwriter Hillary Scott. Upcoming concerts also include Ira Wolf on March 11 and Tim and Myles Thompson on April 8. To view the entire schedule visit
