Public Invited to Give Input on Park Name
Gig Harbor, Wash. – November, 2012 The City of Gig Harbor Parks Commission will be taking public input at their December 5th meeting regarding naming of Gig Harbor’s newest park, formerly known as the Ancich property.
The City acquired the Ancich property last month. Immigrants from Croatia that settled here in the early 1900’s, the Ancich family contributed to the early economic development and community growth in Gig Harbor. The 3-parcel site is located at 3518 Harborview Drive and is the last cluster of undeveloped waterfront in the View Basin. The site includes a netshed registered on the Gig Harbor Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1920’s, the last boat to moor at the historic netshed was the purse seiner “Heritage.” John Ancich Jr., skipper of the vessel, tragically died when it ran aground and sank in 2001. His name is listed on the Fishermen’s Memorial located at Jerisich Park that commemorates local fishermen lost at sea. Within a few years of his son’s death, John Sr. passed and the property sold to private developers in 2005.
The Gig Harbor Parks Commission will meet in Community Rooms A/B on Wednesday December 5th at 5:30 pm at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street. For additional information contact (253) 853-7609.
